The Sneeboer Tool Sharpening Kit is your end. Everything you need to clean, sharpen and protect hand-forged steel, in one storage box that lives on the shed shelf instead of rattling around the bottom of a bucket.

Scrub off the day's soil with the wire brush. Take the edge back with the whetstone, a dozen strokes along the original bevel, both sides. Then a thin wipe of linseed oil over the blade and the ash handle before it goes back on the hook. Your trowel slices through roots instead of tearing them, and the handle stays smooth instead of drying out and splitting.

Ten minutes at the start of the season and again halfway through. You didn't buy a Sneeboer to treat it like any old trowel. This is how you prove it.

Care

• Rinse and dry the whetstone after use.
• Keep the linseed oil sealed and stored upright.
• Lay oily rags flat outside to dry, or soak them in water, before you throw them out. Rags soaked in linseed oil can heat up and catch fire if left scrunched in a pile.
