Mainichi means everyday in Japanese, and these are Niwaki's everyday bypass secateurs. A chunky catch you can work with cold or muddy hands, a spring that is actually secured so you do not spend Saturday on your knees hunting for it in the mulch, and the yellow grips that make them impossible to leave behind. They come right or left handed, because nobody should prune with the wrong hand.

The arm covers are standard kit for pine pruning in Japan and long overdue here. Cotton from wrist to elbow, a ribbed cuff at one end and elastic at the other, and they stay put while you are deep in the foliage. The gloves are the thin ones, a nylon and spandex liner with a nitrile grip at forty grams a pair, so you can still feel a stem through them.

Suit up. Then go and settle it.

Materials & Care

• Secateurs: wipe clean, dry and oil after use. Never cut wire, metal, stone or plastic. Cut on the diagonal, base of the blade for heavier work, no twisting.
• Arm covers: cotton. Wash cold, air dry.
• Gloves: nylon, spandex and nitrile. Hand wash cold, air dry.
