Keep them away from wire, stones, and plastic—they have a refined palate and only crave organic matter. Cut diagonally across branches to respect the fibres, and always use the base of the blades for the heavy lifting.

To keep that Japanese steel singing: clean off the resin and gunk with a Crean Mate, dry them thoroughly, and apply a coat of Camellia Oil. Sharpen them after every use if you want to experience that "out-of-the-box" magic every single time you step into the garden.
