The Sneeboer Tool Sharpener is the fix, and it takes about ninety seconds. An extra hard silicon carbide stone set into a shaped wooden handle, made for the tools Sneeboer forge themselves. It is built for the heavy end of the shed: spades, hoes, edging knives, the things that meet stones and roots and come off worse for it.
Draw it along the bevel at the angle the tool came with, a dozen strokes, both sides, then wipe the swarf away. A sharpened spade slices a root instead of tearing it, and the difference in your back at the end of an afternoon is not subtle.
Sharpen at the start of the season and again halfway through. That is the whole maintenance schedule.
