Weathervane Whale
Weathervane Whale
A nautical legend, hovering over your hydrangeas.
Most people settle for a rooster. We aren’t most people. The Whale Weathervane is for the gardener who wants their weather reports delivered with a touch of maritime drama. It’s a striking, slightly unexpected feature that turns a standard roofline or garden post into a local landmark. Everyone who walks past will have an opinion; usually, it's "where did you get that?"
Handmade right here in New Zealand using sand-cast aluminium and brass, this isn't a flimsy decorative afterthought. We’ve used traditional methods and a black powder-coated finish to ensure it looks as good during a storm as it does in the golden hour. It’s built for the long haul.
Because we’re a bit obsessive about the details, it features a smooth-running movement and a welded plate at the base for straightforward installation. When the wind picks up, this whale glides with a level of grace usually reserved for the open ocean.
Installation Rituals:
1. Choose a prominent, open spot where the wind can find it.
2. Grab some non-corrosive bolts or screws suited to your surface.
3. Position the bottom plate. Use a spirit level to ensure the stem is perfectly vertical before tightening—accuracy matters.
4. Assemble the NSEW cross with the Lock Washer.
5. Use a compass to find North, align your weathervane, and tighten the lock bolt.
6. Apply a little grease to the axle before sliding the top section on.
Note: Ensure the ball bearing slides up inside the axle to rest on top of the shaft—this is the secret to that friction-free, silent rotation.
