How to Change Hydrangea Colour | The Chemistry Bit

The hydrangea colour trick, properly explained

Hydrangeas are the rare flower whose colour you can change with chemistry. Blue can become pink. Pink can become blue. Purple can be coaxed into deeper shades. White stays white (sorry). For something that grew up in your grandmother's garden, hydrangeas are surprisingly interactive.

Here's the real explanation, the actual method, and the catches nobody tells you.

What's actually happening

The colour change isn't about food or water. It's about aluminium.

Hydrangea macrophylla (the mophead and lacecap kinds) produces a pigment in its petals that responds to aluminium ions in the soil. When the plant can absorb aluminium, the petals turn blue. When it can't, the petals turn pink.

The amount of aluminium a plant can absorb depends on soil pH. In acidic soil (pH below 6), aluminium is soluble and the roots take it up freely. In alkaline soil (pH above 7), aluminium binds to the soil and stays put. The plant can't reach it.

So the rule:

  • Acidic soil equals blue flowers
  • Neutral soil equals mauve or purple flowers
  • Alkaline soil equals pink flowers

How to make them bluer

Add aluminium sulphate. Available from any garden centre. Dissolve a tablespoon in 4 litres of water and pour around the base of the plant in spring and again in autumn.

Also helpful: mulch with coffee grounds, pine needles, or oak leaves. These all push the soil pH down slowly.

Don't overdo it. Too much aluminium will burn the roots. Two applications a season is plenty.

How to make them pinker

Raise the pH. Add garden lime (calcium carbonate) around the plant in spring. A small handful for a young plant, a couple of handfuls for an established shrub. Water it in.

The lime binds the aluminium and the plant can't reach it. Petals fade to pink over the season.

This takes longer than going blue. Soil takes weeks to neutralise.

What about purple?

Purple is the middle ground. Slightly acidic soil with a bit of aluminium available but not heaps. A mature plant in average garden soil often produces mauve to violet flowers without intervention. If you want a real purple, ease off the aluminium sulphate and let it settle.

The catches

  1. It only works on Hydrangea macrophylla. Paniculata, arborescens (Annabelle), quercifolia and most other species don't change. White stays white. 'Limelight' stays lime.
  2. It takes time. Don't expect overnight change. Soil chemistry shifts over months, not days. New growth shows colour change before the existing flowers do.
  3. Existing flowers don't change colour mid-season. You're working on next year's blooms, or this year's late blooms.
  4. Some varieties are stubborn. 'Endless Summer' takes more aluminium than older mophead varieties to turn properly blue.
  5. Container hydrangeas change colour faster. Less soil to neutralise, so any treatment hits harder.

The easy test

If you don't know what colour your hydrangeas naturally want to be, test the soil pH. A $20 kit from a garden centre is enough. Anything under pH 6 will skew blue. Anything over pH 7 will skew pink.

Why bother

Because hydrangeas are about the only flower in your garden you can actively design with. Want a blue hedge? Acidify the soil. Want a pink and blue contrast against the porch? Treat one side, not the other. Want a wash of purple? Find the middle.

It's the closest gardening gets to mixing paint.
