How to Use Poly Tunnels to Extend Your Growing Season in New Zealand
A poly tunnel (short for polythene tunnel or polytunnel) is one of the most effective tools a New Zealand gardener can use to extend the growing season, protect crops from frost, and speed up early spring planting. Whether you're growing tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers, or leafy greens, a poly tunnel creates a microclimate that gives your plants a head start and keeps them producing longer.
What Is a Poly Tunnel?
A poly tunnel is a hoop-shaped frame covered with a clear or opaque polythene film. It acts like a miniature greenhouse, trapping heat and protecting plants from wind, rain, frost and pests. Unlike a full greenhouse, poly tunnels are lightweight, affordable, and easy to set up and move. They come in a wide range of sizes, from small individual row covers to large walk-in structures that span an entire garden bed.
When Should You Use a Poly Tunnel in NZ?
New Zealand's temperate climate is generally mild, but frosts can occur in many regions from May through September, and even October in colder inland areas. Poly tunnels are most useful for:
Early season planting: Start tomatoes, peppers, courgettes and basil indoors under a poly tunnel 4–6 weeks before the last frost date, giving them a significant head start before transplanting outside.
Winter cropping: Keep growing silverbeet, kale, spinach, Asian greens and lettuce through the cooler months by providing frost protection and boosting daytime temperatures.
Autumn extension: Keep summer crops like tomatoes and beans producing well into autumn after outdoor conditions cool down.
Wet season protection: Protect fruit crops like tomatoes and strawberries from blight and botrytis caused by excessive rain or humidity.
What Grows Best Under a Poly Tunnel?
Almost any vegetable or fruit will benefit from the extra warmth and protection of a poly tunnel, but some crops are especially well-suited:
Tomatoes and capsicums: These heat-loving crops thrive under poly, allowing you to grow them in cooler regions of NZ where outdoor production is unreliable.
Courgettes and cucumbers: Poly tunnels protect the large leaves from wind damage and keep the soil warm for better fruit production.
Strawberries: A poly tunnel brings forward the strawberry harvest by several weeks and keeps fruit clean and dry.
Leafy greens: Lettuce, spinach, Asian greens and chard all perform beautifully over winter in a sheltered poly environment.
Seedling raising: Use a small poly tunnel as a DIY propagation house to germinate seeds and harden off seedlings before outdoor planting.
Managing Heat and Ventilation
One of the most common mistakes with poly tunnels is overheating. On warm spring and summer days, temperatures inside a poly tunnel can rise rapidly, sometimes well above 40°C which can scorch plants and encourage fungal diseases. Ventilation is essential.
For walk-in poly tunnels, open the ends on warm days to allow airflow. Smaller cloche-style tunnels can have the sides lifted or rolled up. If you're using a poly tunnel year-round, consider investing in a shade cloth or UV-stabilised film that diffuses light and reduces heat build-up.
Watering Under Poly
Rain won't reach your plants under a poly tunnel, so irrigation is your responsibility. Drip irrigation is the most efficient method as it delivers water directly to the root zone while keeping foliage dry, which reduces the risk of fungal issues like botrytis and powdery mildew. Water in the morning to allow any surface moisture to dry before temperatures drop at night. We have the Iriso drip irrigation systems.
Choosing and Setting Up Your Poly Tunnel
When selecting a poly tunnel, consider the size of your growing area and how you'll use it. Walk-in tunnels offer the most flexibility and growing space, while smaller cloche tunnels are ideal for individual rows or raised beds. Look for UV-stabilised polythene film that will hold up to UV light over multiple seasons, cheap film may degrade after a single summer.
At Bugg, we stock a range of poly tunnel covers and accessories suited to New Zealand growing conditions. Whether you're looking for a small row cover or a full-season tunnel solution, we can help you find the right fit for your garden.
Making the Most of Your Poly Tunnel
A poly tunnel is an investment in your garden's productivity. Used well, it can add months to your growing season, protect against unpredictable NZ weather, and dramatically expand the range of crops you can successfully grow. Pair it with good soil preparation, consistent watering and careful ventilation, and your tunnel will reward you with bumper harvests from late winter through to early winter again.
